My Little Adventure

I would like to share a REAL and personal story with you that happened recently.

I am officially unemployed, no job lined up, no resume, tired, anxious, I wasn't ready. Overwhelmed with uncertainty, I didn't do much that day, just sulked in my own self pity. At this point, I am struggling with my thoughts, whether to just find another "job" or pursue something that I am truly passionate about. Consulting with the "Good" and "Bad" conscience on my shoulders, the "Good" proclaiming that pursuing my passion would make me and my family happy. The "Bad" protests with skepticism that my skill set can be used for a higher paying job and that I don't have the professional qualifications to pursue my passion. This dialogue went on and on into the early Saturday morning.

Some may think that job searching on the weekend is pointless because the HR offices are closed, managers are off or unavailable, it's too busy, ect. I didn't want to wait until Monday to start searching. I knew that there are postings online that I can look up, prepare my resume, and send them off now so they will be the first thing the employers see on Monday. Timing, I knew that Labor Day weekend was coming and that would only give me Monday through Thursday, to grab anyone's attention before they leave early on Friday for the four day weekend. I spent half of the day searching online and polishing up my resume for positions. For this area and my particular needs, I found craigslist.org and Facebook useful. Snagajob, ziprecruiter, monster.com, and other sites had little to no listings at all for me and the few they did have were 25+ miles away from me. This may not be the case for you though, considering that every person has different work experience and skill sets. The other half of my day I spent working on my "Honey Do List", cleaning and doing yard work. The physical work was surprisingly relaxing and satisfying.

I am on my computer, my Pandora is loaded, Google Drive is fired up, gmail tab is ready, and craigslist is loading. I'm sifting through the job postings, carefully selecting the positions that interest me and accessing whether I would be a good fit for this company. Some postings that I clicked on were related to my field of interest and some were completely new and unfamiliar to me. I clicked on anything that I thought would be enticing and exciting to do and stacked up a bunch of positions to apply to. After reviewing the dozen positions, I narrowed it down to six positions and began drafting an email to send to each one.

Game day- Knowing more fresh postings will be listed, I jump online to search for more postings. Sadly, nothing special caught my eye, but I did start receiving replies from the positions I applied for on Sunday. By Tuesday, I locked in three interviews for positions that I will label, "My Passion", "More Money", and "The Last Resort".

The interviews- The "Last Resort" one was an utter failure, the guy kept rescheduling our phone interview via text message and seemed somewhat disorganized. This was a red flag for me and I did not want to be apart of a company that appeared disorganized. The "More Money" called and had a pleasant interview with the recruiter. I was pleased to hear that it was for a Manager Position at a high end restaurant. This position would definitely make more money, look great on my resume, and is a concept I saw myself enjoying. The recruiter told me that there will be a follow up to meet the owner for a second interview. This was a good sign and I was looking forward to hear back from the recruiter.

My Passion- I love coffee and food. . . if you know me, you know that I love coffee and that I love to eat. If you have worked with me, you know that I am creative, always looking for ways to improve, push limits, and wants to go, go, go. After interviewing with this one, I think I have finally found my match. Call it fate, call it luck, call it whatever you like, I truly feel that I have found a golden opportunity. The opportunity to fully express my full potential is both exciting and terrifying because this has never happened before.

A week after being unemployed, I accept a job offer. I spent the week accessing what I want and expect out of myself, searching through hundreds of job postings, preparing my interview attire, furnishing my resume, appreciating time with my family, and defining what I want to do with myself. In that short week, I went from being indecisive and uncertain, to being confident and grateful. Some people would say that I was lucky to find a job within a week, but I am sharing this story to tell you that it's not luck. That I followed certain initiatives that I have learned over the years and applied them to lead me to where I am now. I believe if you or someone that you know that is looking for a job, that follows these initiatives, will lead them where they want to go. The comical irony, that I started MB Career Lab to help people obtain a job and later find myself unemployed as well. I am writing this not only to share my own personal experience, but to hopefully inspire others to pursue similar results.

I want to help others achieve their goals and make their future BOLD. I will be posting tips and steps that I have learned to find a job that suits you quickly and efficiently. Would love to hear from you if you have any questions or have a story to share. Please E-mail mbcareerlab@gmail.com
